I bought several of your feeders and they were a big hit! Our Caique and Cockatoo vocalize every time they see us doing anything with the feeders. Placing an ear of corn into the large feeder provides the birds with fun times while we are away at work, I can see where she has had to move it around to try and gain access to more of the corn. Thanks for the ideas on your blog, keep the information coming.

Three ways to mount the Plastic Foraging Feeder Toy

three waysA versatile bird toy allows change without having to purchase another toy.  We created the foraging feeder-toy to do just this.  You can hang the feeder-toy in 3 different ways to change the difficulty and make the process more interesting for your birds!

1) The first way you can hang the foraging feeder-toy is through the whole in back of the toy, this way the toy hangs securely on the side of the cage. If you hang the feeder toy near a perch your bird will have easy access to the contents and it will be easy for your bird to "check things out". You can also hang it away from a perch once they get the hang of it.

2) The second way you can hang it is through the cap perpendicular to the cage bars like a perch. This will require your bird to climb on it and use both feet and beak to explore and empty the feeder-toy.

3) The most advanced and third way to hang the feeder-toy is through the cap hanging straight down from the top of the cage. Now things get really interesting for your bird. They must either climb down onto the feeder-toy or hang upside down to gain access to the content.

In addition to being able to hang the feeder-toy in three different ways you can also increase the difficulty by changing what you put inside! You can put nuts in dixie cups and fill up the feeder-toy with them. In this way your bird must manipulate the dixie cups and the feeder-toy to gain access to the nuts. You can also fill a brown paper bag with shredded paper or stuffing material and seeds, nuts or pellets and place the whole bag into the feeder-toy. Your bird will have to maneuver the toy, open the bag and pick through the paper or stuffing to gain access the treats.

2. Place desired items in feeder-toy (be creative).

How to use The Twiggy Trunk Feeder -Toys

Twiggy Trunk1. The Twiggy Trunk is designed to bring the outdoors indoors for your     companion parrot.

2. Please familiarize yourself with local non-toxic bird-safe plants.

3. Harvest the bird-safe plants.

4. Wash the bird-safe plants thoroughly with vinegar and water and rinse well.

5. Place the sticks in the holes on the Twiggy Trunk and stuff the top as full as     possible because your bird will love every minute of chewing these bird-plants.

6. Remove any un-chewed plants after 24 hrs.

7. Wash the Twiggy Trunk by hand or in the dishwasher.

8. Repeat.

* A list of websites that provide non-toxic plant lists:

** For those difficult-to-bathe birds try using large leafed plant varieties in your Twiggy Trunk. Soak the leaves and place them in the Twiggy Trunk. You might be surprised to find your bird cleaning itself by rubbing and playing in the wet leaves. This is one way they bathe in the wild.

*** Please make your choices wisely. We will not be held responsible for any mishaps. We recommend familiarizing yourself with several abundant and local plants that your avian vet can recommend. Feel free to email info@foragingahead.com with any questions or concerns regarding local non-toxic plants found in the state of Florida.

How to use The Bamboo Feeder-Toys

bamboo1. Place dry food/foraging items (we recommend sterilized pine straw or cleaned bird safe plants) in the feeder-toys.

2. Attach to the side of the cage towards the top as these types of feeder-toys are open on the top.

3. Sit back and watch the fun.

* These feeder-toys are suitable for all birds.

** We recommend only using dry items like; birdie biscuits, pellets, seeds/nuts and sterilized pine straw for filling.

*** These feeder-toys are designed for chewing and are consumable. They come to you sterilized. Please don’t try to wash them. If they get soiled try wiping with a damp cloth and baking in the oven at 250 F until dry. Due to the organic nature of this product mold can grow if the bamboo gets wet, we use untreated bamboo to keep your bird safe. As with any toy please monitor the use.

**** When your bird is ready for a new bamboo feeder-toy, a discount is offered for the new feeder-toy without stainless steel hardware. Save your hardware.

NOTE:***** We recommend the bamboo feeder-toy for excessive chewers as it is the most durable and economical for your companion parrot.

How to use The Sprouting Jar

sprouting1. Cover the bottom of jar with approximately an inch deep layer of     seeds.

2. Fill the jar with water and put the lid on it.

3. Set the jar aside for approximately 12 hours (or overnight).

4. Pour the water out of the jar with the lid on.

5. Rinse the sprouts several times filling the jar and emptying it with the lid on.

6. Set the jar upside down on a towel for a few minutes to drain excess water.

7. Set the jar aside right side up.

8. A couple of times a day repeat steps 5 and 6.

9. In 2 – 3 days you will have sprouts; rinse them and place the jar in the refrigerator     until you are ready to serve them.

*The internet has many useful websites on spouting and seeds, nuts and legumes to use.

**Rinse before serving.

***If you smell a moldy or musty smell discard sprouts and start over.

****If you always have a musty or moldy smell to the sprouts then just soak for 24 hours and serve without sprouting. Your bird will still enjoy many of the benefits of sprouts from germinated seeds.

How to use the Foraging Trays

Foraging Trays1. Hand wash the plastic tray making sure it is rinsed well and is completely dry.

2. Sprinkle a couple of your pets favorite food items, like sunflower seeds, treats or pellets into the bottom of the tray and place the tray in the bottom of the cage.

3. Once your parrot has the idea that there is food in the tray cover the food items with the bamboo or pinestraw that came with your tray and put the tray back in the cage. Now your bird will rummage through the ‘stuffing’ to find and eat the food!

4. Make sure to keep the tray free of bird poop! You can scoop out soiled materials. Every few days dump the entire contents of the tray and wash the tray in warm water. This will stop anything bad from growing!

5. Once you have used all of the ‘stuffing’ you can a) order more or b) use other bird safe materials such as shredded white paper.

6. Don’t use wet items in the foraging tray unless you plan on dumping the contents and washing the tray within several hours.
